The Year of The Political IDIOT: The Day After

The day after President Obama met with Americans at a suburban Virginia family’s backyard to share stories of how the Affordable Health Care Act provisions effective today help real people immediately, Republicans unveiled their “pledge” to repeal healthcare reform, extend tax cuts for the richest 2 percent, and a host of not-so-secret provisions. Republicans said they came up with their “pledge” by listening to the American people — as if we’re an amorphous mass not represented by a Democratic Congress and a President we elected with 53 percent of the vote.

Actually, the GOP “pledge” was written by Brian Wild, a Boehner aide who was a lobbyist for AIG ($740,000), Andarko Petroleum ($800,000), Comcast ($1.1 million), Exxon ($1.3 million), Pfizer ($625,000) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as part of its $34 million lobbying package. Ironically, while Tea Party morons were foaming at the mouth over possible Romanoff Czars in the Obama Administration, John Boehner is not in the least constrained by Obama’s self-imposed bar on hiring lobbyists. You know, teabaggers, it’s that whiff that you’re beholden to the corporate special interests that fund your racist anti-American activities.

Cutting through the “haze of war” bullshit (per our favorite witch), Republicans are pledging to slash taxes for millionaires and billionaires, explode our deficit, privatize Social Security and Medicare, repeal the Affordable Health Care Act, roll back financial reforms, increase defense spending without specifying any offsets and, if they do not get their way, shut down government and investigate the Obama Administration, provoking frivolous Constitutional crises. This is the Republican/Tea Party’s real and largely unspecified (in its for-public consumption propaganda document) agenda. These hypocrites and traitors (defined as deliberately working to undermine the public good and the national interest while waging all-out war on the American people and the middle class) talk a good game but refuse even to pass pay-go legislation.

So now it’s the day after, and the Republican wannabe-Speaker John Boehner and his bumbling lieutenants, no doubt reacting to the President’s forays outside Washington, decided to unveil their “pledge” to Americans at a hardware and lumber store in Virginia, too. If the President goes to Virginia to talk about healthcare, well, that’s where the Republicans need to go. That’s fine except, as the New York Times pointed out:
“Republican members of Congress decided to announce their pledge at a hardware and lumber store in Sterling, Va., just outside Washington’s Beltway, to try to symbolize their anti-Washington themes.

But that decision has also provided another line of attack for the critics, who gleefully pointed out that the small business chosen for the announcement would almost certainly benefit from many of the economic programs Mr. Obama proposed and Republicans fought.

The store probably qualifies for tax credits to provide health care to employees and to hire unemployed workers. It can take advantage of special expensing rules and additional depreciation.

The small business bill just passed in the Congress — over the objections of most Republicans — would allow the company to write off $500,000 in equipment investments and its owner would receive a tax cut worth about $6,000 on the first $250,000 in profits.”
The Tea Party constituency wasn’t impressed either. Blogger Erick Ericksson wrote in the right wing site Red State that “this is perhaps the most ridiculous thing to come out of Washington since George McClellan.” Oh, I don’t know. McClellan built up the Army of the Potomac into a professional fighting force that went on to defeat Robert E. Lee. He was just a bad fighting general who was hyper-reluctant to commit his finely drilled troops to battle. My pick is Newt Gingrich; it’s self-evident. Here’s Ericksson:
“These 21 pages tell you lots of things, some contradictory things, but mostly this: it is a serious [sic] of compromises and milquetoast rhetorical flourishes in search of unanimity among House Republicans because the House GOP does not have the fortitude to lead boldly in opposition to Barack Obama.

This document proves the GOP is more focused on the acquisition of power than the advocacy of long term sound public policy. All the good stuff in it is stuff we expect them to do. What is not in it is more than a little telling that the House GOP has not learned much of anything from 2006.”
Double-Oops.

Meanwhile, (for Glenn Beck) as Republicans unveiled their pledge to save us from communist bedbugs, shocking Video has emerged of SOCIALIST Obama Meeting With a MARXIST Cell of healthcare-challenged Americans:

‘Senator Pothole’ Goes NY Postal With Fox Racist — And It’s a Thing of Beauty

Even if you disagreed with Alfonse D’Amato on the issues and found him a pain in the ass more often than not, those familiar with the three-term senator from New York had a grudging admiration for his pluck and outrageous combativeness. Al D’Amato was the quintessential working class ethnic Italian from Brooklyn. And he clung to office in what today we call a “Blue State” as a fierce infighter.

It’s not easy for a Republican to be elected senator from New York, let alone three times. Al had to work extra hard to stay on top, hence the nickname Senator Pothole, for his delivery of constituent services. D’Amato wore the nickname with pride. New York Magazine once ran a cover story entitled “Senator Pothole” with, you guessed it, a close-up of a New York City street pothole.

D’Amato haters used the nickname as a pejorative, like the unsubtle Al ‘Put It In the Back Seat’ D’Amato. There were persistent rumors of mob ties, especially with Al’s brother Armand, but nothing ever stuck. D’Amato’s constituents didn’t much care anyway, as long as he kept those services coming. In this sense he was like the Dapper Don, John Gotti, a local working class hero sticking it to establishment Manhattanites and The Man.

New Yorkers love a scrapper, and Al fit the bill. They loved his abrasive manner, his speech impediment and whaddya-whaddya in-your-face Brooklyn accent. There was an element of high political theater to his attacks. During the O.J. Simpson trial he once used a mock Japanese accent to impersonate Lance Ito, the presiding Japanese American judge. He had to apologize on the Senate floor. He also referred to the portly Democratic Congressman from New York, Jerry Nadler, as “Congressman Waddler” and did a duck walk to embellish the slur. He apologized for this, too.

Back when filibusters were of the old-fashioned “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” talk till you drop variety, Al D’Amato once filibustered a bill by reading the District of Columbia phone book. He filibustered a bill that would have cost upstate New York 750 jobs by singing “South of the Border (Down Mexico Way).” D’Amato holds the record for the second and seventh longest filibusters ever recorded in the United States Senate.

But for all his quirks and often outrageous conduct, Al D’Amato was a conservative Republican who could break the mold and work across the aisle in surprising ways. In 1993, he was one of only three Republicans to vote to allow gays to serve openly in the military. That’s three more Republicans than voted today, 17 years later, in the failed effort to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. In 1996, he sided with Democrats to extend federal protections in ending hiring discrimination against gays. Reflecting his working class — albeit Archie Bunker working class — roots, D’Amato was strongly pro-labor. When one of his opponents called him a fascist, D’Amato made the most of his faux personal injury and offense, suggesting it was an attack on his Italian heritage. Naturally ‘Il Duce’ won re-election in a tight race. It took Chuck Schumer to finally end Al D’Amato’s run by giving him a taste of his own medicine: In the heat of the campaign Al called Chuck a “putz-head,” which means “fool” or “penis-head” in Yiddish. Chuck turned the tables of personal outrage on Al, consolidating the Jewish vote. Almost certainly, D’Amato appreciated Schumer’s right-back-atcha political stab.

So it comes as no surprise that when Al D’Amato turned up on a Fox political show he tore into a scummy racist of the dime-a-dozen type they host day-in and day-out. It was like the Al D’Amato of old, and yes, it was a thing of beauty:

Postcript: Alfonse D’Amato may not be a progressive’s cup of tea, but he done good here in his inimitable style. D’Amato has four children from a prior marriage and two children, a boy and a girl, born in 2008 and 2009 from his current marriage. He is 73. (Shrugs) Hey. What else is there to say?

Another Luke Russert Gem

Intrepid MSNBC Congressional Correspondent Luke ‘The Force Is Not With Me’ Russert came up with another pseudo-journalistic gem on the upcoming cloture vote to begin the process of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Ending DADT, he said, is an issue that “excites Democrats, and fires up the base.” Um Luke … I realize you might be too busy seeking access and reading GOP talking points to fill out your reports, but in case you missed it: 78 percent of Americans favor repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, according to a new CNN poll. Some Democratic “base.” Nice touch, though, with the American flag lapel pin. Unfortunately, it can also signal TOOL, especially for aspiring independent journalists who have on occasion been called “unpatriotic” and “enemies” for bucking government. You do know you’re not an arm of the government? Luke?

Witchy Woman, Your MAKER Bill Maher Awaits You. Please Please Go? – A MUSICAL TRIBUTE

Christine O’Donnell cancelled her appearances on the Sunday political talk shows, with her campaign saying she was “exhausted.” Hmm … This sounds familiar; where have I heard it before? Oh right! Her fellow teabagger Rand Paul cancelled his Meet The Press booking after Rachel Maddow savaged him (in a “fair” interview, an exhausted Paul conceded later) over his views on the Civil Rights Act and other controversial issues.

From the Paul campaign:
“A spokesperson for the Tea Party-endorsed candidate informed NBC News late Friday afternoon that an exhausted Paul was canceling his interview on Sunday's Meet The Press.
From the O’Donnell campaign:
“Late Friday night, her campaign canceled saying O’Donnell was “exhausted” and had to return to Delaware. Saturday morning O’Donnell called me and said this: “I got triple-booked. I had been invited to go to church and then a picnic. I have to keep my priorities to Delaware voters.”
Is it just me, or does anyone else smell amateur hour here? For example, her campaign had the same canned excuse for running away from the national media as Rand Paul’s: His cancellation on MTP was only the 3rd guest in 62 years. Do you suppose Christine O’Donnell is the fourth? If not, was it another Tea Party/Republican extremist? Just a wild guess.

Joked O’Donnell to an audience of zombie supporters:
“How many of you didn't hang out with questionable folks in high school?” [Not dabbling in witchcraft. Hmm … I guess I was sheltered in high school.] “There's been no witchcraft since.” [Which begs the question: Exactly what witchcraft did O’Donnell partake of — are we to expect new revelations?] “If there was, Karl Rove would be a supporter now.”
Um Christine, I’ve got news for you: Karl Rove did endorse you the very next day. His conversion was so dramatic, even for a pathological liar like Rove, that we wondered in passing if he was under some kind of spell!

A Special Musical Tribute To Christine O’Donnell From THE THINKER Follows. ENJOY!

Adventures In TEA PARTY Campaigns: O'Donnell Thugs Get Up Close And Personal at Beck Rally

Here’s the setup: Christine O’Donnell and staff are on the Mall at the Glenn Beck rally, held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s speech, reportedly shooting a campaign commercial. Two people described as “citizen journalists” start filming O’Donnell. She is seen briefly at the start of the video on the left, and heard speaking off-camera. The following video is described as: “Christine O'Donnell's supporters and staff do not approve of citizen journalists filming the “Citizen Politician”…” This is what happens next:

It’s a PUBLIC SPACE, and the O’Donnell staffer, realizing their thuggish behavior is being filmed, offers this lame excuse for it: “Hey, you guys are stalking.” The woman filming them replies: “I’m not stalking anybody. I’m here on the Mall making a video.”

Here’s what I’d like to know: Will Fox News call for an investigation of harassment and intimidation by O’Donnell campaign staffers of citizens exercising their First Amendment rights in a public place?
I seem to recall Fox went ballistic over a 30-second loop video of two black guys from the New Black Panther Party wearing berets and standing outside a polling place in a predominantly black neighborhood in Washington D.C. They were just standing there.

I wonder how those white wingnut limp noodles would react if the citizen journalists filming Christine just happened to be two strapping black guys:

Limp noodle 1: “Hey, I’m gonna check on the beverages and potato salad.”

Limp noodle 2: “Hmm ... I think I’ll join you. Uh ... carry on gentlemen.”

Can’t get enough of Christine O’Donnell’s kookiness? Here’s much more!

THE COVEN DEMANDS IT: VOTE CHRISTINE O'DONNELL

“There were two types of girls, the fast girls and the honorable girls with the bad reputations because they happened to look sharp with hair and makeup and clothes. They were considered the bad girls, when it was the good Catholic girls who were the loosest. Appearances were deceptive then.”-Anton LaVey, Founder, Church of Satan

Adventures In TEA PARTY Campaigns: "I DABBLED INTO WITCHCRAFT" (Guess Who?)

OH MY ... Teabaggers, ARE YOU SITTING DOWN?!?
“I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I'm not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do. One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar and I didn't know it. I mean, there was a little blood there and stuff like that.

We went to a movie and then had a little picnic on a satanic altar.”
Update: After this video aired Ms. O’Donnell cancelled all her appearances on the Sunday shows. OH MY.

She’s running all right ... AWAY from the media! Notice a pattern here, teabaggers: Sister Sarah, Rand Paul, Sharron Angle, and now ... America’s wingnut witch next door. I mean, what’ve you all got to lose [hide]?!? HUH?

IT JUST GOT WEIRDER ...

Couple of Annoying Examples Why The Media Is Held In Such Low Esteem

Heard on MSNBC -
Norah O’Donnell: “I would be fascinated to see a Senate with Christine O’Donnell, Sharron Angle, Rand Paul, Joe Miller ... ”

Guest: “Sure. It would be fun for us!”
I would be fascinated to see you start paying your top bracket fair share in taxes instead of picking the pockets of the middle class.

I would be fascinated to see the poverty rates decline.

I would be fascinated to see our children’s future secured by quality healthcare and education, and our Social Security and Medicare secure from right wing extremists.

How about you, Norah? By the way, no relation, right? RIGHT?

Note to Luke ‘The Force Is Not With Me’ Russert: Introducing a puff-piece on John Boeher, you said: “folks on the left tried to define Boehner as a country club Republican and the NYT talked about ties to lobbyists ...”, but he came from a humble background.

Um Luke, so what does Boehner’s humble background prove? (FYI, “folks on the left” don’t need to “define” John Boehner as a country club Republican linked to special interests. These are empirical facts. And Luke, by “left” do you mean your senior colleague Chris Matthews, who has frequently characterized Boehner as a country club Republican?)

Richard Nixon came from humble beginnings and gave us Watergate. FDR was a patrician raised in wealth, privilege, and surrounded by country clubs, who became a champion for the people and one of the three greatest presidents in U.S. history. So Luke, the next time you decide to take a dump on the viewers with a puff-piece short on facts and balance, you might want to get a few pointers on journalistic integrity and contextual research from Rachel Maddow.

Notes From The Fringe: "Can It Get Any WEIRDER Than This?" Edition

Republican Ransom Note To America - Extending the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 or 3 percent “would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 to folks who are already millionaires.” – President Barack Obama

Christine O’Donnell Returning From Vacation At Island of Dr. Moreau* The richly quotable TEA PARTY darling and Senate candidate from Delaware, warned of the sinister stem cell research she witnessed while a guest of the reclusive Dr. Moreau:
“They are — they are doing that here in the United States. American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains. So they're already into this experiment.”
Here are the next 10 zaniest quotes from the woman Karl Rove endorsed as “nutty.”

McConnell Claims Rich Hurt As Poverty In America Highest Since 1994

The New York Times editorial today notes:
“For both parties and certainly the broad swath of independent voters, defeating this new crop of Tea Party nominees has become imperative to avoid the sense of national embarrassment from each divisive and offensive utterance, each wacky policy proposal.”

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Let’s be real, folks. This teabagger crowd of angry, old, ignorant white voters does not represent America. Not even close. They’ve stepped into an vacuum created by the tough economy and disappointment of Obama voters. Christine O’Donnell is a fringe hard right candidate whose views are not representative of the centrist electorate. She won a closed primary with 5 percent of all Delaware registered voters. Most of her 1 million+ contributions are flowing in from out of state. The same goes for Joe Miller in Alaska, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Ken Buck in Colorado, and Rand Paul in Kentucky.

Every single one of these candidates aren’t only ‘pro-life’ but they don’t even support an exception in cases of rape and incest. These extremists would roll back the clock to back alley abortions and Jim Crow pre-Civil Rights. For all their talk of “freedom,” they support government intervention in a woman’s most private decision, they would force her carry to term a child conceived of rape or incest, or face criminal penalties.

This is a RADICAL RIGHT position. Moreover, these extremists would repeal healthcare reform, financial reform, Medicare/Medicaid, privatize Social Security, abolish the Department of Education and the EPA and, for all their talk of Constitutional sanctity, move to repeal the 14th and 17th Amendments. Further, they will do EVERYTHING to bring down the presidency of Barack Obama, including gumming up the works with endless frivolous investigations, using their subpoena power to bring government to a standstill, up to and including the stunt pulled by the Gingrich crowd in the 90s, to shut down government and cause a showdown between the President and Congress.

If you think the current Republican Senate minority’s historically unprecendented abuse of the filibuster can’t get any worse, you ain’t seen nothing yet. By any means necessary, is the extremists’ creed. In Weimar Germany, Hitler came to power with 24 percent of the vote. He never represented a majority of the German people, but economic conditions were so dire and his opposition so dispirited and divided that the fascists rode this voter apathy to power. The fearful political and economic situation in America today is not dissimilar from Weimar Germany of the 20s and 30s. It really is imperative that Democrats, independents, and rational Republicans wake up to this threat from the Far Right and go to the polls this November to reclaim the center in American politics.

These are dangerous times, people. VOTE.

The REAL WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST Resides In Arizona And Her Name Is Jan Brewer

As seen on The Blaze:
John Dennis has been called “the longest of long-shot candidates.” This is his first campaign. He told the San Francisco Chronicle, “I thought I’d aim low.” Good aim.
If by that he means STEALING MY MATERIAL I’d say he’s right. Long before this derivative ad made the cable networks rounds for being oh so clever and creative, OUR LITTLE BLOG had already pegged Arizona Governor Jan Brewer THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST. I blogged the story and artwork (below) on April 18 to be exact, and another post with THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST in the title, AGAIN, well before this bit of Republican chicanery on video.

Plus, it makes sense. Regionally, the state of Arizona is certifiably, historically and geographically THE WEST -- not to be confused with liberal SAN FRANCISCO, Baghdad by the Bay, Sodom by the Sea with its metrosexual mayor, thriving gay community, and European-style universal healthcare. All of which makes it one of the rare places in America where the standard of living and QUALITY OF LIFE actually matches the best in the world.

“THE WEST” my ass; San Francisco is WEST COAST. The REAL WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST presides over a RED POLICE STATE, and her name is JAN BREWER.

So wingnuts … STOP STEALING MY MATERIAL! (Grr.) This is why the GOP is called THE PARTY OF NO IDEAS.

JOHN DENNIS = LOSER.

Ironic Teabagger Sign After TEA PARTY Darling Christine O'Donnell Knocks Off Mike Castle in Delaware

The Continuing Tea Party Adventures of Christine O’Donnell:
GO TEA PARTY!
Um well, if you’re a Delaware Teabagger, “stimulate MYSELF!” is a definite nonstarter!

Your Senate candidate, Christine O’Donnell believes self-stimulation, a.k.a masturbation, is sinful: The “Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. So you can't masturbate without lust.” She is sort of a perky gadfly for The Lord and a favorite of Bill Maher’s because the jaded atheist just looooves cute weirdos with extremist views. The Republican national Senate Committee has already written her off with a “So long, and good luck ...”

Here is Christine O’Donnell talking about her abstinence campaign:

Fools’ Show: Dylan Ratigan Outs Self, Sort Of

It’s not as if I didn’t TELL YOU SO:

MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan: “I consider myself a conservative.”

Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart (vying for INGENUE of the decade): “REALLY?!?”

Ratigan shimmie-shallies: “Libertarians lose me when they go to the law of the jungle but refuse to actually prevent the game from being rigged. I don't think it's the law of the jungle when the game is rigged for the lions to eat everything.”

Then explain this, Dylan: How do you “prevent the game from being rigged” without regulations and President Obama’s “rules of the road?” That is the eternal contradiction of a “conservative” vision of governance. You cannot “prevent the game from being rigged” absent a vigorous and effective regulatory environment. And the minute a “conservative” moves to regulate the game for the benefit of all, he or she is no longer a conservative, but a progressive.

One of the most compelling examples of this is the transformation of Republican conservative Teddy Roosevelt into a flaming progressive once he became a monopoly buster, so much so that T.R. ran as founder and standard-bearer of the Progressive Party, the most successful third party in American history which finished ahead of the Republican Party in the election of 1912.

Yet Another Example of How The Daily Caller Uses Pictures to Slime Its Subjects

The story is a pickup from another site — which does not include the picture — the only way a parasitical, content-leeching site with sparse original material such as the Daily Caller can fill its front page. As with the Jon Stewart-monkey picture, the story itself is “straight news;” the Caller’s sole contribution to it is a farcical illustration of two dudes (it’s ambivalently unclear whether they’re military) embracing in a suggestive way as two uniformed military men look on with what seems disapproval and/or homophobia. This picture totally misrepresents the reality of gays in the military on many levels, but most importantly grossly distorts the news story attached to it.
The distinction the wingnut media has totally erased is one between news and commentary/editorial content. News is news: Straight up. As much as bias is often injected in how news is reported or where the emphasis lies, it’s still the 5-WH: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. As images — pictures, videos, illustrations, photos, and cartoons — are part of that content, to present news with false or distortive images is inappropriate and contrary to accepted standards of journalism.

If the Daily Caller wanted to express an opinion about gays in the military rather than reporting the news, then the illustration above would not be blatantly fudging the image/graphic line between news and commentary. But editorializing news with provocative and racist images is standard MO for this slime-site.

Wingnut Rag, Daily Caller, Shows Racist Colors

This is the repulsive headline and picture-caption on the right wing rag, Daily Caller, that can barely contain its racist eruptions. A teenie-tiny brainchild of embittered wingnut and MSNBC has-been Tucker Carlson, the Daily Caller is mostly known* for its obsessive-compulsive fixation on progressive media in general and Keith Olbermann in particular.
In its desperately seeking quest for the ephemeral “liberal bias” the Caller hacked and mined J-List, a private Google forums discussion group for some 400 journalists and academics with progressive political views. But the breathless rag‘s 'Page Six'-style gossip and innuendo posts failed to uncover any liberal bias “smoking gun.” Instead, when a Carlson e-mail begging to join the group was published in retaliation (he was denied, for obvious reasons: No Rats Allowed) and it was revealed that one of his reporters was a J-Lister, the wingnut rag quickly ended its broadbrush smear of honest professionals whose members-only private exchanges, though never meant for publication, were not inconsistent with their for-publication work product. It didn’t even rise to the level of a tempest in a Tea Party pot, but spoke volumes of Carlson’s backstabbing character and his team’s sleaziness, as evidenced (above) by the depiction of President Obama as a monkey.

Their obsession with Keith Olbermann has shades of 'Fatal Attraction'. The presumed female assigned the KO beat “because I have to” (uh-huh) linked to a lengthy and rather flattering New Yorker bio of Olbermann because it seemed like the only reference she could find that Keith had once dated wingnut Laura Ingraham. (1) Yawn; (2) If you’re a Lib, I can see it (if you catch my drift); (3) this rather pathetic reporter, whose lame digs at KO and his program lack much substance, seems to have an unusual interest in his dating habits; and (4) Tucker Carlson crapped in his pants with childish antics by purchasing KO’s dot.com domain name to link to his publication (hahaha ... um, not working), and behaving like a regular pissant with spiteful and infantile whines re: big bad Keith at MSNBC. Tucker’s got issues, what with all the self-loathing and self-inflicted embarassment.

In brief, the wingnuts are hardly worth the copy, except as a good example of what goes on in their tiny whiny racist minds. (In the wingnut universe, the monkey depicting our President above is supposed to be funny and not offensive.) As their Mama Grizzly likes to say, they’re real “sick puppies.”

*Did I mention sexism.

A Question of Faith

Last week in the course of his presser, President Obama felt compelled to reiterate his Christian faith when making a broader point about intolerance toward the Islamic religion as contrary to our values:
“As someone who relies heavily on my Christian faith in my job, I understand the passions that religious faith can raise. But I also respect that people of different faiths can practice their religion . . . and they are still good people.”
This was not an impromptu remark, coming on the heels of a White House statement that affirmed the President’s faith:
“President Obama is a committed Christian, and his faith is an important part of his daily life. He prays every day, he seeks a small circle of Christian pastors to give him spiritual advice and counseling, he even receives a daily devotional that he uses each morning. The President's Christian faith is a part of who he is, but not a part of what the public or the media is focused on everyday.”
The White House was responding to a poll that found nearly 20% of Americans believe falsely that Obama is a Muslim and 43% aren’t sure. Not surprisingly, behind the rumors of the President as secret Muslim is the right wing smear machine driven by Fox, hate radio, and wingnut blogs perpetuating the myths of the President’s religion and birthright with a strong partisan component.

The issue was further soiled by wingnut evangelical Reverend Franklin Graham claiming Obama is Muslim by virtue of his father’s “seed” and so deemed by Islam. As if DNA is biological and religious destiny, too. (A novel religious twist to the theory of Evolution.) Never mind that Obama’s father was a committed atheist who abandoned the two-year-old child to his American mother’s care:
“My father was almost entirely absent from my childhood, having been divorced from my mother when I was 2 years old; in any event, although my father had been raised a Muslim, by the time he met my mother he was a confirmed atheist, thinking religion to be so much superstition.”
Blogger Ann Althouse eloquently put to rest the question that “genealogy is destiny:”
“Regardless of what the Muslim world may or may not believe, this whole seed fixation is profoundly un-American. It says that genealogy is destiny, that a man is Muslim regardless of what he espouses or believes. It’s all about descent—and nauseatingly close to the “one drop rule” of the post-Reconstruction South. That rule held that if a person had any African or Indian ancestry whatsoever, he or she was classified as “colored” and subject to anti-miscegenation laws, voter disenfranchisement, and segregation at large. At least eighteen states adopted some form of the rule; Virginia’s 1924 law, for instance, was called the Racial Integrity Act.”
This is America. Here, neither race or ancestry nor genealogy or DNA determines a person’s religion, spiritual path, and destiny. Incredibly, Newsweek’s Howard Fineman actually suggested on Hardball that President Obama should have joined a church in Washington for the sake of political optics:
“Can I say something here that‘ll probably get me in trouble? But I‘m going to say it anyway. Barack Obama probably should have joined a church here, OK? Now, I‘m not excusing any of the hatred or nasty language or any of the dirty strategy that we‘re talking about. But some things in politics you have to do at least for the symbolism.”
Fineman added, “after he came to town, a lot of this stuff would never have arisen.” Perhaps. But the reason President Obama did not join a church in Washington, D.C. had nothing to do with politics much less the religion of Islam. As recounted in Jonathan Alter’s book, Promise:
“Let’s be blunt,” Obama said. “We were pretty affected by what happened at Trinity and the controversy surrounding Reverend Wright. That was disturbing to us. It made us very sensitive to the fact that as president, the church we attend can end up being interpreted as speaking for us at all times.” To avoid that, the Obamas sometimes attended services at a tiny chapel at Camp David run by the military and used by a few military families. The navy chaplain there, Carey Cash, whose great-uncle was the singer Johnny Cash, was known for his compelling sermons. He had witnessed a lot of the action in Iraq and spoke of how a “wall of angels” protected the soldiers around him. The president found special comfort in church when responding to tragedies or weighing matters of war and peace, but like other presidents, he attended services irregularly, in part out of concern about the inconvenience it caused other worshippers.”
Any genuinely religious American should understand, respect, and accept the President’s Christian faith without qualification or reservation. This president has written more about his personal spiritual journey than many of his predecessors, certainly Ronald Reagan. The fact that he hasn’t trumpeted it with media photo-ops outside a church holding the Bible or with pictures of him worshipping in Camp David speaks well of his Christian faith. Religion, after all, is innately private and personal.

People forget, most don’t even know, that the President worships with family, friends, and colleagues of our military who are in harm’s way every single day. That he would not exploit this for political purposes, is admirable. That right wingers would question and exploit his Christian faith because the President has chosen to keep it private, is despicable.

Teabaggers, FYI: Founding Fathers Can't Find John Boehner Either

In Keeping with the TEABAGGER’s Opera, here’s the FLIP-FLOPPER John Boehner, who would have us believe he and the Republicans vehemently opposed the Wall Street bailout. The date is September 28, 2008, less than two months before the presidential election. George W. Bush was president, and the TARP bailout was a Bush emergency initiative proposed by Bush Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson.

As President Obama reminded us a few days ago, his very first day in office he was greeted with a nice gift-wrapped $1.3 TRILLION deficit right on his doorstep. All he and his economic team did was prevent the country from falling into another Great Depression, stabilized the markets so they came roaring back, and saved the U.S. auto industry, a key American industrial sector that these teabagger bastards would just as soon have collapse. And they have the ignorance-is-bliss gall to call our President un-American and socialist, and unconscionable racial epithets. Add to crooks and liars on the Republican side, ingrates, hypocrites, and a whole lotta teabaggers suffering from short, medium, and long-term memory loss. If not the Big A, I believe it’s called AMNESIA:

Independents, FYI: John Boehner is a SCUMSUCKER

This is a message to so-called “independent” voters for whom voting once a year (if that) is the extent of their political participation. And anyone else who still has a brain but is contemplating voting Republican.

When wingnuts pooh-pooh the President’s “personalizing” of the midterm elections by putting a face on the opposition, it’s a clear sign they’re worried and the strategy is a winner. I watched enough of the McLaughlin group to verify this truism. Nativist Pat Buchanan and wingnut Manhattanite Monica Crowley, an insufferable talk radio shill, both dismissed it.

Buchanan argued the President was “elevating” Minority Leader John Boehner. Nice try Pat, but you’re too old to fake it when you lay on the BS thick. You know full well that in dirty politics you’ve got to pull the crud out from under the rotting foundation and expose it, before disposing of it. Only then can we shore up the foundation.

The shallow Crowley basically let the cat out of the bag when she said Americans “have no idea who Boehner is” and they don’t care. Oh really? Sorry to upset your plans for concealing the scum and extremists in your midst (which by the way, includes you), but when a wingnut says Americans shouldn’t care who the scumsucker slated to become Speaker of the House is, if Republicans win control — it’s because they’re very afraid the voters will find out before November rolls around.

The thing about Boehner, from my personal observation of the man, is that he is dour, unimaginative, unintelligent, derivative and unoriginal (he frequently uses words like “insensitive” or “we have to be grown-ups” after others have said them, to make the opposite point), but cunning and despicable; in short, an individual who scarcely exercises his smile muscleswhen he tries it comes across at best as a grimace and proud of it. Beyond the low personal character, which includes being lazy and a Georgetown barfly, this spills over onto his public servant persona (an ironic oxymoron), which is unethical, straddling the illegal. During the House debate on legislation to regulate tobacco, Boehner was seen on the House floor distributing checks from the tobacco lobby.

Now that, according to the Idiot Punditocracy, Boehner is poised to become next Speaker of the House, a New York Times article exposes his sleaziness in greater detail than simply the barf-bag nauseating prospect of seeing this bastard’s face plastered nightly on the politics networks. (Memo to MSNBC: Don’t get too cozy with the Idiot Punditocracy’s triumphalism that you start parroting their line, lest you lose legions of progressive viewers too disgusted to see Boehner flapping his jaws incessantly on the Boehner toob.)

Here’s a sampler:
WASHINGTON — House Democrats were preparing late last year for the first floor vote on the financial regulatory overhaul when Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio and other Republican leaders summoned more than 100 industry lobbyists and conservative political activists to Capitol Hill for a private strategy session. The bill’s passage in the House already seemed inevitable. But Mr. Boehner and his deputies told the Wall Street lobbyists and trade association leaders that by teaming up, they could still perhaps block its final passage or at least water it down. “We need you to get out there and speak up against this,” Mr. Boehner said that December afternoon, according to three people familiar with his remarks, while also warning against cutting side deals with Democrats. That sort of alliance — they won a few skirmishes, though they lost the war on the regulatory bill — is business as usual for Mr. Boehner, the House minority leader and would-be speaker if Republicans win the House in November. He maintains especially tight ties with a circle of lobbyists and former aides representing some of the nation’s biggest businesses, including Goldman Sachs, Google, Citigroup, R. J. Reynolds, MillerCoors and UPS.

They have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to his campaigns, provided him with rides on their corporate jets, socialized with him at luxury golf resorts and waterfront bashes and are now leading fund-raising efforts for his Boehner for Speaker campaign, which is soliciting checks of up to $37,800 each, the maximum allowed.
So if you can wrest yourselves for a moment from watching Jimmy Johnson on “Survivor,” read on, indies. Because this is what you’ll be voting for if you pull or punch or touch that “R” stands for repugnant government.

The Israeli-Palestinian Peace Talks, Netanyahu, and 9/11

While researching troubling aspects of the terrorist attack on America exactly nine years ago to this day, I came across a report remarkable for its journalistic integrity and thoroughness from a most unlikely source: Fox News. Fox investigative reporter Carl Cameron’s four-part report indicates Israeli intelligence had specific advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks but did not share the information with U.S. authorities. Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad warned the U.S. of an impending attack, but according to Cameron, the warning was nonspecific to protect Israeli “sources and methods.” Cameron reported that at least 60 Israelis were arrested in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, some with links to Israeli intelligence and military:
“Since September 11, more than 60 Israelis have been arrested or detained, either under the new patriot anti-terrorism law, or for immigration violations. A handful of active Israeli military were among those detained, according to investigators, who say some of the detainees also failed polygraph questions when asked about alleged surveillance activities against and in the United States.

“There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9-11 attacks, but investigators suspect that the Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it. A highly placed investigator said there are “tie-ins.” But when asked for details, he flatly refused to describe them, saying, ‘evidence linking these Israelis to 9-11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It’s classified information.’”
Israeli Prime Minister (then-leader of the Likud) Benjamin Netanyahu recently told an audience at Bar Ilan university that the September 11, 2001 terror attacks benefited Israel: “We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and the American struggle in Iraq” … that “swung American public opinion in our favor.” This comes as no surprise given a hidden video of Netanyahu bragging of how easily he could manipulate Americans and derail the Oslo Accords, which had established the framework for peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Mr. Netanyahu’s frosty relationship with President Obama and his party’s historic hard line toward a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict do not presage a different result from previous failed peace talks. Netanyahu must go through the motions because Israel’s complicated relationship with the United States requires it. And he must appear to be making a good-faith effort to ease political pressures from progressive Israelis and from Jewish Americans who do not subscribe to the hardline Likud posture.

Some American analysts have optimistically compared Netanyahu’s chances for success with Nixon’s opening to China and Reagan’s rapprochement with Gorbachev. Historic hardliners, they argue, have the credibility to negotiate a peace agreement and sell it to their base at home. There is some truth to this, barring one small detail: Even if the creation of two states living side-by-side in peace casts a final agreement into the foreign policy orbit, the twisted path to getting there is largely a question of domestic politics and territorial concessions based on mutual assured security. Such is the symbiotic relationship between the negotiating adversaries.

This is not a negotiation between two equal and sovereign states. Or between a victor and vanquished state. Therein lies the conundrum that never the twain shall meet. For Benjamin Netanyahu the most important consideration has always been to “keep your base.” Rarely has the axiom all politics is local had such portentous international implications. Will the tiger change its stripes in this latest incarnation?

Ultimately, Netanyahu’s hope that the 9/11 terror attacks would become a game changer for Israel’s security benefit did not come to pass. If anything, the pressure for a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is even greater now, with Iran stepping into the vaccuum left by George W. Bush’s war of choice against Saddam’s Iraq. There were never any WMD -- Bush’s pretext for his preemptive (doctrinal) attack -- to be found in Iraq, which did not attack us on 9/11. The great beneficiary of the war was Iran. And as it flexes its regional power muscles and seeks to weaponize its nuclear program, it is fast becoming an existential threat to Israel.

The price paid by the U.S. in blood and treasure for the arrogance and hubris of neoCons like Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Netanyahu is steep and climbing still. It should not take a wild conspiracy theorist to demand answers to the question of who, beside the Israelis, had prior knowledge of the 9/11 attacks and sought to profit from them in the stock market. Strangely, the results of SEC and FBI investigations into the matter have never been made public. President Obama is determined not to “relitigate” the past actions of the Bush-Cheney administration, probably because the guardians of this classified information believe we can’t handle the truth. But in a free society, the people have a right to know where the money trail leads even if it ends in treason.

You Know What Game They're Playing, Chris

The question is, will the American people be duped by it this November; or will they reject the fearmongering, culture wars, hateful right wing rhetoric, and Islamophobia of 2010, just like they did in 2008? As the President said, the choice this time remains the same: hope over fear. Confounding the pompous predictions of the puerile Punditocracy, the American voters will once more choose hope over fear and tolerance over hate. The Democratic Party levee holds firm against the predicted Hurricane of right wing reaction. Which means the Senate and House remain in Democratic hands.

Satirizing Pastor Jones: Strictly For Laughs, Folks ...

Now that the nutjob pastor has suspended the burning of Korans:

GIVE 'EM HELL, BARRY!!!!!

It’s about time! It’s the fourth quarter, Mr. President, our team is trailing and you just hit a three-point shot from downtown with nothing but net. Orangeade John is starting to sweat as the rub-on instant tan begins to melt and drip into his eyes. “Man that stings,” thinks boner-boy, “this ain’t my game … Oh how I wish I was out on the links with my country club corporate donors … Aargh!”

Awesome speech, Mr. President. Making the case, block-by-block, reminding the American people what this midterm election is about: Staying the course, or falling back into the same old horrible ditch they got us into, trying to dig ourselves out with hand-to-hand combat against those anti-American Republicans and misguided teabaggers. You cain’t beat somethin’ with nuthin’ and Boehner and his crowd of billionaire plutocrats and the teabagger brigands have a WHOLE LOT OF NUTHIN’! Obama channeling Truman in ’48 railing against the DO-NOTHING CONGRESS — same Republican Congress, different Boehner, SAME RESULT IN NOVEMBER!

It's The One Waiting For the Glenn Beck Rally Bus

Shout-out to Teleman for this.

The Pause That Refreshes, Er ... RELOADS

Is this a question you really have to stop and think about before answering?
YES, IF YOUR PARTY IS CONTROLLED BY RIGHT WING ISLAMOPHOBIC FASCISTS!

Dreams of Fascism in The USA

It’s axiomatic in the mainstream media and ancillary public affairs channels that any mention of Hitler and Nazism except in the most disparaging of terms is a no-no. While the Fox right wing (fascist) propaganda (a British invention, given its modern characteristics by the Nazis) TV and supporting radio networks with a viewership/listenership in the millions (between 8 to 15 million on any given day) readily embrace the techniques pioneered by Joseph Goebbels (most commonly acknowledged by the MSM, the so-called “Big Lie”), its flat-footed MSM counterparts are slow to counter the Fox juggernaut.

It’s more than a little ironic that a Saudi Prince owns a seven percent stake in Fox. While the fascist (yes, fascist) network’s stormtroopers (yes, stormtroopers as in brown shirts; read your history) obsess Islamophobically and commit acts of violence against the American Muslim community, the Fox propaganda network stokes the fear and the anger through its talented propagandists. Behind the scenes the Saudi prince frankly admits an interest in maintaining American dependence on Saudi oil: “Fox News reliably broadcasts misinformation on clean energy, and aggressively fights efforts to move America away from being dependent on a fossil fuels.” But his influence is felt in other ways, too:
In 2005, just months after Alwaleed acquired his first 5.4 percent stake in News Corp., Fox News covered riots in Paris under a banner saying “Muslim riots.” Alwaleed allegedly called Murdoch and had him change the banner to say “Civil riots.” Investigative journalist Joseph Trento also reported that a comment he recently made on a Fox Network morning news show, Fox and Friends, about Saudi Arabian money still financing Al Qaeda, was edited out of the show.
Someone with a conspiratorial bent, say like Glenn Beck viewers and followers, might reasonably conclude that doing business with a Saudi Prince as well as North Korea’s Kim Jong Il is tantamount to high treason; what’s the term -– “palling around” with terrorists and a real communist dictator. (don’t forget, 15 of 19 9/11 terrorists were Saudi nationals and their funding came from (?).) Instead, their misguided attention is drawn by the pied piper of misinformation and lies to our African American president who is about as “socialist” as a can of sardines and, in another ironic twist, has been laboring mightily to wean our country of dependence on foreign oil. Meanwhile at Fox, one of its overarching (serious) themes, beneath all the Beck nonsense, is to deepen our nation’s dependence on Saudi oil. Because it’s good for Rupert Murdoch’s business.

It’s not the first time that a plutocrat capitalist has “palled around” with the enemy. Indeed, one of the most infamous examples of this was Henry Ford’s close business and friendship ties with Hitler’s Nazi Germany. He helped rebuild the German war machine and gave material aid to our mortal enemy in its smashing blitzkrieg against our allies France and Britain. Just as significant, the Bush family also had extensive commercial ties to Nazi Germany. Not to speak of Tea Party funding from a family that made its fortune partnering with communist dictator Josef Stalin in Soviet Russia.

Given all these connections, that would make Beck’s blackboard weep, someone with a conspiratorial bent might reasonably think there’s fascism afoot at Fox; the kind of fascism, perhaps, that is closer to Mussolini’s corporate monopoly fascism than Hitler’s cunning charismatic populism and virulent racism. In either case, though, there is always an enemy of the state that is the scapegoat. (Typically, the state in a fascist culture is defined as an ideal that harks back to its origins –- the Aryan nation, the Roman Empire, and the Founders, that “shining city on a hill” or the undefined (see video) “last best hope.”)

In Nazi Germany, the Jew was the “enemy” to be exterminated. In his rise to power, Hitler began by methodically and ruthlessly eliminating all political opposition –- socialists, communists, labor unions, centrist Democrats and even elements within his own Nazi Party. Mussolini’s fascist state had similar scapegoats, particularly labor unions, absent the racism on steroids of the Nazis. And in the proto-fascism sprouting in this country there is a mix of the two. Shady right wing plutocrats provide seed money and resources for Astroturf “Tea Party” movements. At the same time, racist and fascist organizations plotting in the shadows for decades in this country have used the Tea Party movement as cover to infiltrate and insinuate their noxious ideology of hatred into the media mainstream. Here the scapegoat, the other to be hated and feared, is our African American president.

These groups have been openly supporting the Tea Party and recruiting at Tea Party events. Some people who identify with the Tea Party are proto-fascists, easily manipulated by slick demagogues like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. Others, along with their hideous signs, are straight out of the American Nazi “Aryan Nations” and extremist right wing groups like the John Birch Society. Tea Party darling Sharron Angle, Nevada candidate for senator, echoes one of the Birchers’ favorite “communist government” conspiracies: the fluoridation of water.

Christianity is a hook for fascists. Mussolini said, “The Fascist State does not remain indifferent to the fact of religion in general and to that particular positive religion which is Italian Catholicism. The State has no theology, but it has an ethic. . . . The Fascist State does not create a "God" of its own … nor does it vainly seek, like Bolshevism, to expel religion from the minds of men. Fascism respects the God of the ascetics, of the saints, of the heroes, and also God as seen and prayed to by the simple and primitive heart of the people.”

Much has been said on the Right about so-called “Islamofascism” but the American Right has been silent on the question of the Christian Right in this country. There is no more stark example of the Christian Right gone mad than the plans of a fundamentalist pastor and his congregation to burn Korans on 9/11/2010. Even the warning of America’s top general that this insanity could endanger the lives of our troops and spur attacks against Americans in Islamic countries could not sway this Christian fascist.

As Chris Hedges, author of American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America said:
“The language of violence always presages violence. When someone like Palin posts a map with cross hairs on the districts of Democrats, when she says “Don’t Retreat, Instead—RELOAD!” there are desperate people cleaning their weapons who listen. When Christian fascists stand in the pulpits of megachurches and denounce Barack Obama as the Antichrist, there are messianic believers who listen. . . .These movements are not yet full-blown fascist movements. They do not openly call for the extermination of ethnic or religious groups. They do not openly advocate violence. But, as I was told by Fritz Stern, a scholar of fascism who has written about the origins of Nazism, ‘In Germany there was a yearning for fascism before fascism was invented.’ It is the yearning that we now see, and it is dangerous. If we do not immediately reincorporate the unemployed and the poor back into the economy, giving them jobs and relief from crippling debt, then the nascent racism and violence that are leaping up around the edges of American society will become a full-blown conflagration. Left unchecked, the hatred for radical Islam will transform itself into a hatred for Muslims. The hatred for undocumented workers will become a hatred for Mexicans and Central Americans. The hatred for those not defined by this largely white movement as American patriots will become a hatred for African-Americans. The hatred for liberals will morph into a hatred for all democratic institutions, from universities to government agencies and to the press.
The Tea Party is a means for marginalized extremist and racist groups to go stealthily mainstream and for fascism to spread from the shadows thanks to Fox and its propaganda network. Fascism loves tough economic times. This is no time for Democrats to stay home in November, nor would it be a rational choice for moderate apolitical independents to vote for the Tea Party candidate, who is increasingly indistinguishable from the Republican.

Tracking TEA PARTY Racism At the Beck Rally: You Betcha!

Wingnuts are going ballistic about the joint effort of the NAACP, Think Progress, Media Matters, and New Left Media to closely monitor teabagger racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and threats of violence. It’s about time. And they wasted none of it laying down the gauntlet for teabaggers brave enough to pick it up: TeaPartyTracker.org “monitors racism and other forms of extremism within the Tea Party movement. We call on the Tea Party to repudiate extremists among their ranks and join in civil dialogue with all Americans.”

Here are teabaggers at the so-called religious “restoring honor” Beck-A-Loser rally venting their unfiltered racism and Islamophobia:

This video reminds me of a bizarre reality show remake of the Manchurian Candidate, in which one person after the other has complete memory loss of one of the TOP FIVE most outrageous LIES ever uttered by Glenn Beck, that President Obama is “a racist.” Watch. Beginning at minute 3:24 in which they refuse to believe what Beck said (below) onward. The ignorance of these people is stunning. STUNNING:

Glenn Beck Supporter Tripping Out On Geritol

It is rather pathetic to see ignorant old white people behaving like thugs, while the young are the mature adults. Age does not necessarily bring wisdom. In Glenn Beck supporters it only hardens and coarsens the bigotry and intolerance of their youth.

My favorite comments:
In this video from the Restoring Honor rally, a Glenn Beck supporter confronts protesters holding pro-Obama signs. As you can tell from her elaborate flag-themed hat, she's a big fan of the Constitution — just not the First Amendment.

I'm confused. What honor were they restoring? White people making a mockery of the civil rights movement with their petulant whining about the loss of privilege was never an honor they had to begin with.
