Three in a row?

The only incoming presidents to ever have to lead a nation in such peril were Lincoln and FDR. Luckily those were our two greatest occupants of the White House. We can only hope that history goes three for three this time.

In his first post-election interview, to 60 Minutes, president-elect Obama mentioned reading Jon Alter's book, "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope." It's a great read, and very timely too.

When Lincoln and FDR took office, there were those who doubted whether they'd be up to the task. Obama has the sense of optimism of FDR and the quiet confidence of Lincoln. His cabinet owes as much to JFK's "best and brightest" as to Lincoln's "team of rivals." It's all hands on deck time.

He'll do good.
