The wisdom of Junior High students

From a thank you letter I got today from a junior high student who visited our observatory:

"I also learned about how the sun can kill you if you look at it through a telescope without the filter. It can kill you because the one part of the eye is connected to your brain, so the rays from the sun are so powerful it can explode."

The kid sounds infinitely more intelligent than Chimpy McFlightsuit.

This is precisely on point to my current thesis: we are a nation of fucktards, and the coming Dark Age will make the previous one seem like Camelot.

It's not so big a deal when 7th graders think stuff like this - at least this kid won't stare at the sun. It's a bigger deal when he never learns any different.

I have taught 7th graders who have learned things powerfully more dangerous than the notion that unfiltered, telescopically-magnified sunlight can make your brain explode....
Most of those things have to do with unprotected sex.

I'd like to hear his views on masturbation, oral sex, and how the Cubs will win a world title next year.
