I actually expected the pragmatic centrist from day one. That's who he's been since the 2004 DNC speech, and that's who he'll be forever. If you want a give em hell go down with the ship guy, Obama's not your guy. He'll never publicly ask for something he doesn't think he can get, and he won't draw a line in the sand and say this far and no further. He believes that compromise is noble enough that it's worth standing up for even if he's the only one doing it. I'm not necessarily happy with that approach, but it's no surprise.

Nice to hear from you, Doc. This idea that compromise is a noble end in itself is one that, I'll admit, I missed in him. To be honest, Doc, I was never impressed with the substance of his Blue State-Red State-One United States nonsense except as a brilliant piece of political and rhetorical theater. Think about it. This is a violent country with a bloody history: Slavery, Civil War, genocide of native populations, almost perpetual wars waged in every century. He comes along and sort of polishes up the Tea Party history of white people with noble principles and guns on the side, just in case. The mix of pragmatism with this consuming need to compromise isn't a good combination in a leader, I think. Sometimes you just have to stand your ground.
