Ho ho ho, a gift list suggestion

For the political junkie in your life, I highly recommend Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without the South by Thomas F. Schaller (get it here) The author is a frequent Gadflyer contributor, one of our favorite sites. In Whistling Past Dixie, Prof. Schaller (University of Maryland-Baltimore County) urges Democrats to build a non-southern majority rather than engaging in "futile pandering to the nation's most conservative voters."

Today, the internet seems abuzz about Barack Obama and his presidential aspirations for 2008, and which falls within the purview of Schaller's book.

I anticipate that in 2008, Gingrich, Barbour, Huckabee, and Brownback will "take it to" Obama. Thus, it's important that whomever is the Demo Nominee, challenging the South's addiction to federal largesse and downwardly economic lifestyle, will prove to be a boon for the Demos. Othewise, will be stuck with anothe Ohio or Florida fiasco.
