I was watching Prof. John Mueller of Ohio State (oddly enough, for you sports fans, the holder of the Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies) on the Daily Show. He authored a great book, Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Threats, and Why We Believe Them, pointing out how the "security industry"--airport x-ray machine makers, defense contractors, etc. are making huge profits off a relatively minor threat.
