What if?

As Pete suggested below, today the most prominent feeling among Democrats is probably uneasiness - will this election, which by all rights should be an epic landslide, be yet another disaster? As a friend of mine (also, coincidentally, named Pete) said in an email today "I'm realizing my real fear isn't that the GOP will steal the election (outright, that is, such as through voting machines), but that the American public is actually dumb enough to vote for them yet again." That's the tougher one. I can fight against corruption, and attack the powerful. Changing the minds of the masses is much harder - if the last six years don't scare the living crap out of them, what will it take?

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

As always, Mencken has words of wisdom for us.

As much as I can't stand the greedy Republicans, if we could just get the stupid to vote their own self-interest, this wouldn't even be close.
