He may be a cheesehead, but around these parts let it be clear that we quite love Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold around these parts. I don't agree with everything he does, but it's clear that Senator Feingold is cut from a very different cloth than Hillary Clinton or John Kerry, and that Feingold represents far more accurately the values of the Democratic base. Already known as the only senator to vote against the woefully misnamed Patriot Act, Feingold clearly has a reputation as someone who votes for what he believes in, not necessarily what polls well.
Anyone who spends any time on the internet knows that the real base of the Democratic party isn't just mildly peeved at the Chimp who would be King, we are furious. Not just because of his policy decisions, but because of the immeasurable damage he is doing to our country and our world in our name. For five years now, however, the leadership of the Democratic party has been operating as if opposing such horrible acts is a no win-situation. That leadership led to pathetic showings in 2002 and 2004, and instead of turning back the fascists and avaricious, they let the world continue to decay around us. People like Senator Clinton want to continue with that failed strategy. Russ Feingold does not.
Today, on "This Week with Russ Stephanopoulos":
Tomorrow in the Senate, [Senator Feingold is] going to introduce a resolution to censure George W. Bush. Let me show that to our viewers.
It says, "Resolved that the United States Senate does hereby censure George W. Bush, president of the United States, and does condemn his unlawful authorization of wiretaps of Americans."
Let it be said that if the election were held today, Senator Feingold has my vote.

And it's funny because I had a sales call on a company in Wisconsin a few weeks ago and the person I met with is a big 1800's history buff and we discussed (topically) the whole Iraq war and when I got to the esteemed Senator Feingold (and bully for him, but the way), my contact started to get a little squirmy and briefly touch on "how he had a problem with his politics." Needless to say, this guy was probably in the corner of Cokey McWarMonger the last two times around and dutifully goes to church every weekend. At least, that's what I'd gather from the way his office was set up. Hey, Mr. Rogers, can you say "Bible Study?" I knew you could.
Feingold rocks. It's a real shame that he, like Dean before him, will be painted as a Communist by the beltway Dems and not get out of the primary. They don't like guys with big nuts, guys who say what's on their minds, guys who don't give a shit about the corporate nipple.
We'll be stuck hitching our wagon to Hilary so we can watch her lose by 200 electoral votes to McCain. The best we can hope for is Democratic control of Congress to keep him in some kind of check.
The beltway Dems are killing the party and earning a big assist on hurting the country. Right now, they should be doing everything they can to paint themselves as the party of change and new ideas, but they can't seem to bear giving up power within their own party to anyone else.
