I have heard many people object to GWB laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, given his disgraceful military record. However, I think it is perfectly logical for him to do, because when he was a soldier--no one knew him!
Happy Memorial Day to all (and a happy 24th wedding anniversary to me!)

I spent Memorial Day in Washington DC, touring the various war memorials, etc. I'll probably elaborate on this in a later post, but quickly I'll say that I have no idea how one can visit those memorials and also be willing to send others to war without exhausting every possible other option. I would have to think that years after I sent kids off to war, we'd be building some memorial to them, and I'd want to know that we'd be carving their names into marble or granite for the best of reasons. Go stand by the Vietnam Memorial, watch the soldiers still in pain and the families that still mourn, and then think again about whether war is the right thing. The answer may be 'yes', but you'd better be pretty sure that there isn't another alternative.
