Dreams of Fascism in The USA

It’s axiomatic in the mainstream media and ancillary public affairs channels that any mention of Hitler and Nazism except in the most disparaging of terms is a no-no. While the Fox right wing (fascist) propaganda (a British invention, given its modern characteristics by the Nazis) TV and supporting radio networks with a viewership/listenership in the millions (between 8 to 15 million on any given day) readily embrace the techniques pioneered by Joseph Goebbels (most commonly acknowledged by the MSM, the so-called “Big Lie”), its flat-footed MSM counterparts are slow to counter the Fox juggernaut.

It’s more than a little ironic that a Saudi Prince owns a seven percent stake in Fox. While the fascist (yes, fascist) network’s stormtroopers (yes, stormtroopers as in brown shirts; read your history) obsess Islamophobically and commit acts of violence against the American Muslim community, the Fox propaganda network stokes the fear and the anger through its talented propagandists. Behind the scenes the Saudi prince frankly admits an interest in maintaining American dependence on Saudi oil: “Fox News reliably broadcasts misinformation on clean energy, and aggressively fights efforts to move America away from being dependent on a fossil fuels.” But his influence is felt in other ways, too:
In 2005, just months after Alwaleed acquired his first 5.4 percent stake in News Corp., Fox News covered riots in Paris under a banner saying “Muslim riots.” Alwaleed allegedly called Murdoch and had him change the banner to say “Civil riots.” Investigative journalist Joseph Trento also reported that a comment he recently made on a Fox Network morning news show, Fox and Friends, about Saudi Arabian money still financing Al Qaeda, was edited out of the show.
Someone with a conspiratorial bent, say like Glenn Beck viewers and followers, might reasonably conclude that doing business with a Saudi Prince as well as North Korea’s Kim Jong Il is tantamount to high treason; what’s the term -– “palling around” with terrorists and a real communist dictator. (don’t forget, 15 of 19 9/11 terrorists were Saudi nationals and their funding came from (?).) Instead, their misguided attention is drawn by the pied piper of misinformation and lies to our African American president who is about as “socialist” as a can of sardines and, in another ironic twist, has been laboring mightily to wean our country of dependence on foreign oil. Meanwhile at Fox, one of its overarching (serious) themes, beneath all the Beck nonsense, is to deepen our nation’s dependence on Saudi oil. Because it’s good for Rupert Murdoch’s business.

It’s not the first time that a plutocrat capitalist has “palled around” with the enemy. Indeed, one of the most infamous examples of this was Henry Ford’s close business and friendship ties with Hitler’s Nazi Germany. He helped rebuild the German war machine and gave material aid to our mortal enemy in its smashing blitzkrieg against our allies France and Britain. Just as significant, the Bush family also had extensive commercial ties to Nazi Germany. Not to speak of Tea Party funding from a family that made its fortune partnering with communist dictator Josef Stalin in Soviet Russia.

Given all these connections, that would make Beck’s blackboard weep, someone with a conspiratorial bent might reasonably think there’s fascism afoot at Fox; the kind of fascism, perhaps, that is closer to Mussolini’s corporate monopoly fascism than Hitler’s cunning charismatic populism and virulent racism. In either case, though, there is always an enemy of the state that is the scapegoat. (Typically, the state in a fascist culture is defined as an ideal that harks back to its origins –- the Aryan nation, the Roman Empire, and the Founders, that “shining city on a hill” or the undefined (see video) “last best hope.”)

In Nazi Germany, the Jew was the “enemy” to be exterminated. In his rise to power, Hitler began by methodically and ruthlessly eliminating all political opposition –- socialists, communists, labor unions, centrist Democrats and even elements within his own Nazi Party. Mussolini’s fascist state had similar scapegoats, particularly labor unions, absent the racism on steroids of the Nazis. And in the proto-fascism sprouting in this country there is a mix of the two. Shady right wing plutocrats provide seed money and resources for Astroturf “Tea Party” movements. At the same time, racist and fascist organizations plotting in the shadows for decades in this country have used the Tea Party movement as cover to infiltrate and insinuate their noxious ideology of hatred into the media mainstream. Here the scapegoat, the other to be hated and feared, is our African American president.

These groups have been openly supporting the Tea Party and recruiting at Tea Party events. Some people who identify with the Tea Party are proto-fascists, easily manipulated by slick demagogues like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. Others, along with their hideous signs, are straight out of the American Nazi “Aryan Nations” and extremist right wing groups like the John Birch Society. Tea Party darling Sharron Angle, Nevada candidate for senator, echoes one of the Birchers’ favorite “communist government” conspiracies: the fluoridation of water.

Christianity is a hook for fascists. Mussolini said, “The Fascist State does not remain indifferent to the fact of religion in general and to that particular positive religion which is Italian Catholicism. The State has no theology, but it has an ethic. . . . The Fascist State does not create a "God" of its own … nor does it vainly seek, like Bolshevism, to expel religion from the minds of men. Fascism respects the God of the ascetics, of the saints, of the heroes, and also God as seen and prayed to by the simple and primitive heart of the people.”

Much has been said on the Right about so-called “Islamofascism” but the American Right has been silent on the question of the Christian Right in this country. There is no more stark example of the Christian Right gone mad than the plans of a fundamentalist pastor and his congregation to burn Korans on 9/11/2010. Even the warning of America’s top general that this insanity could endanger the lives of our troops and spur attacks against Americans in Islamic countries could not sway this Christian fascist.

As Chris Hedges, author of American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America said:
“The language of violence always presages violence. When someone like Palin posts a map with cross hairs on the districts of Democrats, when she says “Don’t Retreat, Instead—RELOAD!” there are desperate people cleaning their weapons who listen. When Christian fascists stand in the pulpits of megachurches and denounce Barack Obama as the Antichrist, there are messianic believers who listen. . . .These movements are not yet full-blown fascist movements. They do not openly call for the extermination of ethnic or religious groups. They do not openly advocate violence. But, as I was told by Fritz Stern, a scholar of fascism who has written about the origins of Nazism, ‘In Germany there was a yearning for fascism before fascism was invented.’ It is the yearning that we now see, and it is dangerous. If we do not immediately reincorporate the unemployed and the poor back into the economy, giving them jobs and relief from crippling debt, then the nascent racism and violence that are leaping up around the edges of American society will become a full-blown conflagration. Left unchecked, the hatred for radical Islam will transform itself into a hatred for Muslims. The hatred for undocumented workers will become a hatred for Mexicans and Central Americans. The hatred for those not defined by this largely white movement as American patriots will become a hatred for African-Americans. The hatred for liberals will morph into a hatred for all democratic institutions, from universities to government agencies and to the press.
The Tea Party is a means for marginalized extremist and racist groups to go stealthily mainstream and for fascism to spread from the shadows thanks to Fox and its propaganda network. Fascism loves tough economic times. This is no time for Democrats to stay home in November, nor would it be a rational choice for moderate apolitical independents to vote for the Tea Party candidate, who is increasingly indistinguishable from the Republican.

Tracking TEA PARTY Racism At the Beck Rally: You Betcha!

Wingnuts are going ballistic about the joint effort of the NAACP, Think Progress, Media Matters, and New Left Media to closely monitor teabagger racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and threats of violence. It’s about time. And they wasted none of it laying down the gauntlet for teabaggers brave enough to pick it up: TeaPartyTracker.org “monitors racism and other forms of extremism within the Tea Party movement. We call on the Tea Party to repudiate extremists among their ranks and join in civil dialogue with all Americans.”

Here are teabaggers at the so-called religious “restoring honor” Beck-A-Loser rally venting their unfiltered racism and Islamophobia:

This video reminds me of a bizarre reality show remake of the Manchurian Candidate, in which one person after the other has complete memory loss of one of the TOP FIVE most outrageous LIES ever uttered by Glenn Beck, that President Obama is “a racist.” Watch. Beginning at minute 3:24 in which they refuse to believe what Beck said (below) onward. The ignorance of these people is stunning. STUNNING:

Glenn Beck Supporter Tripping Out On Geritol

It is rather pathetic to see ignorant old white people behaving like thugs, while the young are the mature adults. Age does not necessarily bring wisdom. In Glenn Beck supporters it only hardens and coarsens the bigotry and intolerance of their youth.

My favorite comments:
In this video from the Restoring Honor rally, a Glenn Beck supporter confronts protesters holding pro-Obama signs. As you can tell from her elaborate flag-themed hat, she's a big fan of the Constitution — just not the First Amendment.

I'm confused. What honor were they restoring? White people making a mockery of the civil rights movement with their petulant whining about the loss of privilege was never an honor they had to begin with.

Beck The Lunatic Thinks God Caused Miracle Geese Flyover of His Rally

Maybe so. But here’s the more likely scenario (along divine providence lines): God sent his flock of miracle geese on a dry-run flyover with a stern warning for Beck: “Continue pissing me off, and next time this will be a real bombing run with the geese deployed in V-formation for maximum target acquisition when they take a MASSIVE DUMP on you and your followers.”

“You get off with a warning this time, Beck.”

Adventures In TEA PARTY Campaigns? NO, But It Could Be ...

The young dude, who is not to our knowledge related to Rahm Emanuel, was pleading his case: “I can say whatever the FUCK I want; I gotta lotta money riding on this game!”

Spoken like a true New Yorker: Betting money on a tennis match! We’re still trying to determine whether “Rocky” Gramps is a teabagger. By the way, the old guy is all right.

Beck Fans' Idolatry of This Hateful Charlatan Is, Well, Like The Hitler Worship of Nazi Germany

so·ci·o·path   [soh-see-uh-path, soh-shee-]
–noun Psychiatry .
a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial
and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

This is for the misguided, and frankly completely baffling individuals (you know who you are, because I have corresponded with you from time to time), who continue to patronize Glenn Beck and listen to his hateful garbage. I am interested in how you can justify Beck’s hateful rants, noted here, his attack on the President’s 11-year old daughter, his constant and incessant lies, and as the anniversary of 9/11 approaches, this expression of hatred for the 9/11 families (just “ten of them,” as if in this sick punk’s brain hating just a few, not all 3,000, is OK), and calling the predominantly black and poor New Orleans victims of Hurricane Katrina, “scumbags.”

You do not have to be a psychologist or psychiatrist to understand that this is a very sick individual; a mentally ill person. Beck’s dripping contempt and hatred for poor black people and for victims of atrocities is illuminating. It provides a glimpse into his tortured, sick soul, for whom the poor are to blame for poverty, and the 9/11 families, the ones he hates, are imposing on his comfortable millionaire’s life. Victims, in general, are to be despised for their weakness, which he believes they brought on themselves. This is an individual who is incapable of compassion, empathy, or love for his fellow human beings: All primary Christian values which he pretends to uphold. This false prophet’s Christian values are like those of Adolf Hitler, who said:
We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ... We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press—in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past ... [few] years.
The Speeches of Adolph Hitler, 1922–1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pp. 871–872.

Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith.
speech made during negotiations leading to the Nazi-Vatican Concordant of 1933, 26 April 1933

I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator.
speech before the Reichstag, 1936

In the course of my life I have very often been a prophet, and have usually been ridiculed for it.
speech to the Reichstag, 30 January 1939, as quoted at The History Place
Does this sound at all familiar to you, Beck fans? Try this. Substitute the attribution lines for simply “Glenn Beck” and tell me what you see: Quotations from Adolf Hitler, or words spoken by Glenn Beck every single day on his radio and TV shows.

Sister Sarah Calls Vanity Fair Reporters ‘Limp and Impotent’

Is she angling for a private one-on-one interview with Brian Williams? (Flat-front pants need not apply.) Here is Sister Sarah lashing out with her flaccid dicks analogy:
“Those who are impotent and limp and gutless and they go on their anonymous—sources that are anonymous—and impotent, limp and gutless reporters take anonymous sources and cite them as being factual references. It just slays me because it is just absolutely clear what the state of yellow journalism is today that they would take these anonymous sources as fact. […] When a story is filled with those, we know it’s bogus.”
As for Brian, she added coyly: “My first reaction was listening to Brian Williams and wondering, ‘Brian, that's some stealth reporting. You're not even going to follow up and …. What is he insinuating?’ (GIGGLES)”

Young Turk Cenk Uygur Rips Into Repugs On Social Security

I LOVE this guy! Pay attention WIMPY Democrats, as Cenk Uygur comes out swinging and gives you a clinic, a veritable roadmap, on how to combat the Repugnant schemes to cut Social Security. Watch and LEARN, Democratic officeholders:

Hmm ... If the two major cable public affairs players, MSNBC and Fox — the first, news and progressive commentary; and the other, propaganda and right wing lies — were like professional baseball teams, I would propose a trade:

DYLAN RATIGAN, currently an awful mismatch at MSNBC for Shep Smith, one of the few honest journalists at Fox with a liberal bleeding heart. Let’s face it: Ratigan is a perfect fit for Fox. Formerly of CNBC — stands for Crazies at NBC — infamous for sheltering the wingnut who coined the phrase “TEA PARTY” as well as a hideous woman whose idea of financial reporting is showing lots of cleavage and (botox or collagen?) puff lips, Ratigan seems to live up to the billing.

What this dude is doing on MSNBC’s lineup is anyone’s guess though he is clearly a conservative mole — Ratigan cannot let it rip against the Dems, so he uses the euphemistic “politicians” to rip the Dems (doh - they’re the governing party) under the pretext that both sides are equally to blame — which is a false premise. This is typical libertarian “third way” nihilism, which aims to create maximum destruction of our body politic as they prepare to build the Ayn Rand utopia from the wreckage. In specific policy terms, it means total destruction of universal healthcare, Social Security, Medicare, all entitlements, and a radical noninterventionist foreign policy that even the most dovish of progressives would consider irresponsible. Dylan is on record as endorsing Paul Ryan’s slash-and-burn Randian plan.

So why not send Ratigan to Fox, where he can be himself, hang out with his “Young Guns” buddies and openly blast Democrats, in exchange for Shep, who will be given a Senior News Editor (or somesuch head honcho) title, with carte blanche to straighten out the news division? And promote Cenk to Ratigan’s time slot! One last thing, re: specified cash considerations — Insist that Rupert Murdoch write a $1 million check made out to the DNC.

It would be a WIN-WIN!

Rachel Maddow Nails What Infuriates Progressives About President Obama

Rachel Maddow:
“Whose Idea was it to let Alan Simpson Anywhere near Social Security?”

Answer: “PRESIDENT OBAMA’s!!!!!”

This, after Simpson (sometimes I think he must be the missing TV Simpsons family member) made hateful, biased statements about Social Security, then bad-mouthed veterans collecting benefits for suffering from Agent Orange. This one-man wrecking crew should NEVER HAVE BEEN APPOINTED CO-CHAIR OF THE COMMISSION ON SPENDING AND SOCIAL SECURITY IN THE FIRST PLACE. NOW, HE SHOULD BE FIRED.

Rachel, here’s your assignment (should you choose to accept it): Please summon your friend and ours, El Supremo Obama apologista, Jonathan Alter, to give us poor, outside-looking-in, lacking insight and political savvy plebes a taste of his endlessly impressive and authoritative knowledge of the President’s unassailable logic on this issue, product of Obama’s superior intellect and visionary “eternal optimist long view” of the Republican Obama-as-doormat short-term strategy as they cut, shred, tear, stomp and spit on the President’s agenda, while taking credit for the parts that remain ... like ending combat operations in Iraq.

We’re really, REALLY interested in learning what new, innovative and fascinating excuse/justification and insights Mr. Alter will produce for such an obviously subtle and nuanced decision to pick practically the WORST enemy of Social Security to co-chair the Commission to fix it. Is it some sort of counterintuitive thing? We (I’ll have to dig up the exact disparaging Alter adjective) progressives can’t wait for his next Obama apologia bull session.

P.S. Please tell Jonathan I’m almost done reading his book and have a list of questions which I’ll put in an e-mail ... not that Mr. insider’s insider will have time to reply. But I’ll send it in anyway; there’s at least one suggestion for a further footnote explanation that even he might concede has merit. (Speaking now as an editor -- not one of those terrible progressives of which Mr. Alter is so disdainful -- with free advice.)

Message To Glenn Beck From Guitar (GOD) Eric Clapton

GLENN BECK LIES ABOUT MR. I CANNOT TELL A LIE: “I went to the National Archives, and I held the first inaugural address written in his own hand by George Washington.

NATIONAL ARCHIVES: Archives spokeswoman Susan Cooper insists that Beck didn't lay a finger on any precious documents, much less George Washington’s inaugural address. That would be a major violation of policy. “Those kinds of treasures are only handled by specially trained archival staff,” she explains.

TELL THE TRUTH
(by Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock)

Tell the truth. Tell me who's been fooling you?
Tell the truth. Who's been fooling who?

There you sit there, looking so cool
While the whole show is passing you by.
You better come to terms with your fellow men soon, cause...

The whole world is shaking now. Can't you feel it?
A new dawn is breaking now. Can't you see it?

Tell the truth. Tell me who's been fooling you
Tell the truth. Who's been fooling who?

It doesn't matter just who you are,
Or where you're going or been.
Open your eyes and look into your heart.

The whole world is shaking now. Can't you feel it?
A new dawn is breaking now. Can't you see it?
I said see it, yeah, can't you see it?
Can't you see it, yeah, can't you see it?
I can see it, yeah.

Tell the truth. Tell me who's been fooling you
Tell the truth. Who's been fooling who?

Hear what I say, 'cause every word is true.
You know I wouldn't tell you no lies.
Your time's coming, gonna be soon, boy.

Yup, Glenn Beck:
Your time's coming, gonna be soon, boy.

(Creepy) Adventures in TEA PARTY Campaigns: Not OUR Values

Sorry, but this kind of creepy occurs mostly with fringe right wing candidates, i.e., teabaggers. It’s not the first time, either.

Memo to fence-sitting voters: Take this as a caution when you vote in November. Extremism isn’t only a question of distorted ideology but one of psychology (mental illness) as well. They go hand-in-hand.

Not only that, but across the board, TEA PARTY candidates even when not engaging in such extreme behavior, exhibit off-the-mainstream weird views and uncouth, inappropriate conduct. For example, there’s Nevada’s Sharron Angle, whose extremism not-so-miraculously revived Harry Reid’s campaign once Nevadans became acquainted with this nutjob’s ultra right wing views. Then the Alaska Tea Party candidate, Joe Miller, compared incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski to a prostitute, and vowed not to let her “pull an Al Franken.” (Excuse me, Mr. Miller, but Al Franken won his election for Senator from Minnesota, after every single vote was counted, with Republican challenges every step of the way, lasting months.) This extremist has not backed down from claiming Social Security is unconstitutional, nor walked back other extreme positions, opening the door for a Democratic pickup. Since the TEA PARTY wacko won, the Democratic Senate candidate Scott McAdams, a moderate small-town mayor, has caught the interest of Alaskan voters repulsed by Miller’s extremism.

This guy’s the real deal; a small-town, young, articulate, moderate mayor, with brains, substance, and common sense — the anti-Palin:

Memo to Democratic voters: WAKE UP! And realize your inaction in November could hand over one or more branches of our government to an extremist fringe of candidates, the likes of which have not EVER been part of the Republican Party in such numbers. The election of these crazies would deal a SEVERE blow to our democracy; their repudiation by an informed electorate is critical to the health of our political system.

What President Obama Should Have Said to Brian Williams If He Could Rewind the Interview

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Even a number as sizeable as this — what does it say to you? Does it say anything about your communications or the effectiveness of your opponents to —

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, look, Brian, I — I would say that I can't spend all my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead. (LAUGHS) It — it is what — the facts are the facts. And so, it's not something that I can I think spend all my time worrying about. And I don't think the American people want me to spend all my time worrying about it.

BRIAN WILLIAMS: What does it say to you that Glenn Beck was able to draw a crowd of perhaps north of 300,000 people on the anniversary of Dr. King's speech, on the site of Dr. King's speech? Message appeared to be, at times, anti-government, anti-spread of government. Anti-Obama administration. And in favor of — I guess — re-injecting God into both politics and the American discourse.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I have to say, I — I did not watch the rally. I think that one of the wonderful things about this country is that at any given moment any group of people can decide, you know, “We want to — our voices heard.” And — and so, I think that Mr. Beck and the rest of those folks were exercising their rights under our Constitution exactly as they should.

REWIND INTERVIEW —

PRESIDENT OBAMA: [However, when Mr. Beck attacks my family; that’s crossing a line. When he lies about my religion and concocts fantasies connecting me to so-called ‘liberation theology’ without a single shred of evidence, credible or otherwise, because it’s not something that was ever a part of my life or religious belief, that is irresponsible. Mr. Beck owes me — and the American people — an apology, not only for calling me a racist, which is absurd on its face, but for the daily, irresponsible lies he says about me that disrespect the office of president, and most of all for attacking my family. That’s completely out of bounds, and I’m surprised his employer Fox has not disciplined him. Correct that: I’m not that surprised. After all, Rupert Murdoch donated $1 million to the Republican Party in an election year. That’s unprecedented for a so-called “news” organization, so I have instructed Gibbs to revoke Fox’s White House reporting privileges. (Don’t ever complain I won’t give you an exclusive and a scoop, Brian.)

Let me be clear, Brian. I’m not picking a fight with a news organization. I hope you and your colleagues, who operate under widely accepted professional standards of journalism understand this. Fox (I won’t even call them “News”) has violated those standards, and they have become the propaganda arm of the Republican Party. In an election year, when the stakes are so high for our country, that kind of reckless and irresponsible conduct by a news organization is unacceptable. This does not mean Fox cannot continue to broadcast nor that we are ‘pulling a Dr. Laura’ on them, which is the first thing they’ll whine about. And look, I realize this will probably increase their ratings. But I am calling them out. I demand an apology from Mr. Murdoch, and from every Fox employee with a camera and a microphone who has lied about me and our record; we have the video and the facts to prove it. I hope Mr. Beck and the others are sanctioned. Including all of right wing talk radio — Limbaugh, Savage, those hate merchants who traffic in lies and inciting violence against innocent people. And I expect you (POINTING AT WILLIAMS) to follow up.

You know, Brian. You cant yell ‘FIRE’! in a crowded theater and expect your 1st Amendment rights to be protected. That sort of thing is a crime, and it’s incumbent on you and the responsible media, liberal or conservative, to police these excesses and report the truth. By the way, Mr. Murdoch, Beck, Limbaugh, and Fox should know that the Justice Department and the Secret Service are monitoring what they say daily to make sure no laws are being violated, including hate crime statutes. I am especially concerned about the incitement to violence, which incidentally, is sanctioned by some Republicans, and we’ve seen a rise in violence against innocent Americans of the Islamic faith. I will not tolerate us going back to the days of Jim Crow violence because of the irresponsibility of the few and the inaction of others. I expect you and your colleagues to do your jobs, Mr. Williams.]

PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Speaking of size, Brian … I was told the crowd at Beck’s rally was 87,000, according to CBS, and not the 300,000 you reported. You know, some of those folks looked pretty hefty and comfortable to me, with their government Social Security and Medicare entitlements — not like a bunch of skinny poor folks at all. Once you throw in the picnic basket, the ribs, chicken and beer, why, one could easily pass for three. (LAUGHS) That’s the problem with counting gatherings of comfortable people; there’s always a tendency to overcount. I think the polls reflect that, too.

Oh, and Ax told me Chris Matthews had this caption, “Size Matters” (CHUCKLES), was that an ‘inside baseball’ joke? You know, what they say about the brothers, THAT’S A MYTH, man! Brian, are you really that insecure?” (PRESIDENT LAUGHS HEARTILY.)

BRIAN WILLIAMS: (GLANCING NERVOUSLY SIDEWAYS AT CREW, GIVES CUT-THROAT END INTERVIEW SIGN.)

RHAM EMANUEL: (OFF-CAMERA) “Yo Brian! Is it true they call you fucking ‘Ken’? Who’s Barbie?” (LAUGHS ALL AROUND; Robert Gibbs is seen shaking his shoulders, trying to suppress a snicker.)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: (REMOVING THE MIC FROM HIS LAPEL.) “OK guys, let’s get to work.” (LEANS OVER AND PATS WILLIAMS ON THE KNEE, WITH A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE.) “Thanks, Brian. Let’s do this again.”

BRIAN WILLIAMS: (SLINKING IN HIS SEAT, FACE REDDENING.) “Thank you, Mr. President.”

Pretty Nice Digs For A (M…?)

When President Obama addresses the nation tonight it will be from a redecorated Oval Office. Before the right wing Chihuahuas start bitching about the presumed extravagance, it should be noted that this redecoration did not cost the taxpayers one penny. It was funded by the nonprofit White House Historical Association, with private contributions. Also, it is customary for presidents to redecorate the Oval Office, as Obama’s two predecessors have done. The most compelling reason, though, is to rid the room of the bad Bush Karma that lingered in the upholstery which accommodated Cheney’s and Bush’s and Rumsfeld’s asses, to name a few, the sunburst yellow carpet designed by Laura Bush that was gaudy Texas kitsch, and the drapery that loomed over Bush as he signed off on American citizens’ civil rights and a catastrophic (for the country) transfer of wealth from the middle class to the richest two percent.

The redesign should have been done from the very beginning to rid the space of negative energy left behind from the disastrous Bush presidency. Funny, there are portraits of George Washington and Lincoln, but none of the prophet Muhammad. There’s the presidential seal, but no Islamic crescent. The place looks so American, Lincolnian even, in its dark wood and earth tones. Hmm … not even a foreign French designer’s touch? Strange. Even the quotations adorning the new presidential rug are from great, patriotic Americans:
  • “The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • “The Arc of the Moral Universe Is Long, But It Bends Towards Justice” – Martin Luther King Jr.

  • “No Problem of Human Destiny Is Beyond Human Beings” – President John F. Kennedy

But fear not, teabagging sheep. Glenn Beck will surely enlist the expert assistance of the NASA photo analyst who discovered Big Foot wandering about on the planet Mars, for hidden photographic clues to President Obama’s otherness. Go for it, sickos!

Beck-A-Loser Rally

Monday School With Mike Malloy: Glenn Beck Is a "Scumsucking Punk & Piece of Human Waste"

WHAT THE MAN SAID: GLENN BECK IS A FILTHY COWARD.

AND FOR THE RECORD: GLENN BECK DID NOT APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING THE PRESIDENT A "RACIST." CHECK THE TRANSCRIPT, MATTHEWS. YOU'RE NO ABRAHAM LINCOLN, AND THIS IS NO TIME TO BE CHARITABLE; THIS IS A TIME TO MAKE JUDGMENTS BASED ON THE FACTS AND ON THE CRAZED THEOLOGY OF BECK'S HATE SPEECH.

Glenn Beck’s “I Have A Scheme” Poke-In-The-Eye Is Strictly Personal

Tomorrow, on the hallowed site of one of the great moments and speeches in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial, Glenn Beck and his sick minions will perpetrate a deliberate travesty on the American people and admirers of Dr. King’s eternal legacy of peace and social justice. Glenn Beck and his sick minions will perpetrate their scheme with extreme prejudice and malice aforethought.

Beck called President Obama “a racist,” then today embellished his hate speech with the bizarre claim that the President is moved by a “liberation theology” in which he sees the United States of America, of which he is president, as “the enemy.” Strictly speaking, liberation theology is “a movement in Christian theology which construes the teachings of Jesus Christ in terms of a liberation from unjust economic, political, or social conditions.” It has its origins in the Roman Catholic Church of the 50s and 60s in Latin America. By the 1980s, as democracy swept the military regimes aside and a conservative Pope emerged to lead the Church, the movement died out. Conservative detractors labeled it Marxist, but it was no more so than Martin Luther King’s civil disobedience and lifelong struggle for social justice and civil rights.

More important, there is no evidence whatsoever that President Obama was even aware of, much less subscribed to, liberation theology. This is the problem with the teabaggers and their paranoid fantasies about our President. He cannot be a Christian and a Muslim at the same time; or a socialist and a Nazi; nor can he belong to the black church evangelical tradition and be a Catholic too. When is enough ENOUGH hounding this man about his religion and birthright. These questions have been answered more fully than by most recent presidential candidates. Answer this, sick teabaggers: What is John McCain’s religion? Reagan’s? George H.W. Bush’s? George W. Bush’s? Sarah Palin’s? GLENN BECK’s?

This is only the latest outrageous insanity from a deeply disturbed individual who is running out of offensive and hateful things to say about Barack Obama. Unlike a majority of Americans, Beck’s sick followers harbor a negative view of the President by 87% to 7%. Those seven percent almost certainly represent the misguided individuals who have legitimate grievances that aren’t expressions of hatred and bigotry toward one dark-skinned man and entire groups of people. President Obama has always been Glenn Beck’s personal obsession. In his book The Promise, about President Obama’s first year in office, Jonathan Alter wrote of how the President approached questions of personal identity:
While he was determined they would not shape his presidency, “that hardly meant he ignored his racial heritage. In his first week as president he found a bust of Martin Luther King near a landing in the East Wing and put it in the Oval Office. A framed flier from the 1963 March on Washington that had hung in his Senate office also went near his desk, amid other relics of American history with no connection to race.”
So there’s the connection. It’s personal and deceitful. Glenn Beck LIED when he claimed to be unaware of the date’s significance, not only to President Obama but to millions of Americans. In fact, this is how the huckster Beck described the purpose of his rally:
“We are the inheritors and the protectors of the Civil Rights Movement. They are perverting it. We are on the right side of history, we are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and damn it, we will reclaim the Civil Rights Movement. We will take that movement because we were the people that did it in the first place.”
HISTORY REALITY CHECK:

From the Boston Tea Party (from which Beck’s disturbed followers take their rabble’s name) to 1865 –

MILLIONS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE IN CHAINS AND SHACKLES IN THIS COUNTRY. THEY WERE SLAVES. THEY WERE OWNED BY WHITE PEOPLE. SLAVERY WAS THE CAUSE OF THE CIVIL WAR, AND MORE THAN 600 THOUSAND LIVES WERE LOST TO FREE THE SLAVES.

IT TOOK NEARLY 100 YEARS FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS TO REALIZE THE FULL PANOPLY OF RIGHTS THAT WHITE AMERICAN MALES HAVE TAKEN FOR GRANTED FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE REPUBLIC. IT WAS PASSAGE OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 THAT GAVE AFRICAN AMERICANS FULL RIGHTS OF CITIZENSHIP UNDER THE CONSTITUTION. IT WAS A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT, LYNDON JOHNSON WHO SIGNED THE ACT INTO LAW AFTER IT HAD BEEN PROPOSED BY PRESIDENT JOHN KENNEDY BEFORE HIS ASSASSINATION.

THE FINAL VOTE FOR THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964, BY PARTY, WAS:

Senate:
Democratic Party: 46-21
Republican Party: 27-6

House

Democratic Party: 153-91
Republican Party: 136-35

IN TOTAL:

199 DEMOCRATS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE v. 163 REPUBLICANS CAST THEIR VOTES FOR THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY PROUDLY OWNS THIS HISTORIC LEGISLATION, WITH AN ASSIST FROM MOSTLY MODERATE (AND EVEN SOME LIBERAL) REPUBLICANS.

So where does this GUTTERSNIPE SCUMBAG BECK come off spouting THE OBSCENE WORDS QUOTED ABOVE -- IT’S A RHETORICAL QUESTION.

Glenn Beck is a genuinely disturbed individual. Or, as they say, ONE SICK MOTHER.

Pujols To Join Schilling And Clemens in Unholy Trinity of Wingnut Jocks

Say it ain’t so, Albert:
St. Louis Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols is going to bat for Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.

The three-time NL MVP is joining his manager, Tony LaRussa, at the “Restore Honor” rally organized in Washington, D.C., Saturday, the St. Louis Dispatch reported.

“I made it clear when we were approached: I said, ‘If it’s political, I wouldn’t even approach Albert with it.’ I don't want to be there if it’s political,” La Russa told the newspaper.
For those who do not follow baseball, Albert Pujols is the best all-round player in the game today, one of the greatest sluggers in baseball history, and a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. Pujols is also a black Latino man. One has to wonder: Was Pujols in some kind of bubble, unaware of Beck’s daily racist rants against the President, Latino immigrants, poor blacks, and the unemployed? If so, he’s still got time to reconsider and pull out of the event. He should not lend his considerable prestige to validate what is clearly a political event.

If, on the other hand, Pujols is going into this with eyes wide open, then he will add another record to his name, completing the unholy wingnut trinity with Curt Schilling and Roger Clemens. As for Tony LaRussa, it’s automatic that a dude who conceals his eyes behind aviator shades by day and by night, is a right winger. Good on Rick Chandler, calling them out.

One could expect most of the Yankees to show up at this kind of event. But Pujols’ presence at Beck’s trashing of Dr. Martin Luther King’s memory is surprising. And sad.

Islamic Community Center Hysteria Reveals GOP Fault Lines

Given the rabid rants/electoral calculations of GOP politicians revolving around the planned Islamic community center blocks from Ground Zero in New York City, it’s fitting that Texas congressman and perennial presidential candidate Ron Paul becomes the first (and only –- taking bets) national Republican figure to condemn the “grandiose demagoguery” of GOP opponent(s) of the so-called mosque. In geopolitical terms, as a NYT columnist somewhat noted recently, the ironies abound:

We have sacrificed more than 4,000 American lives to “liberate” one Islamic nation (that did not attack us on 9/11) and formed alliances with another to wage perpetual war against the 100 or so in-country Al Quaeda terrorists (that attacked us on 9/11) and its more robust threat, the Taliban (that did not attack us but together with our nuclear armed ally, Pakistan –- the most populous Islamic nation in the region -- gives Al Quaeda continuous safe haven, although our as-yet non-nuclear armed enemy Iran, does not) as we pretend the corrupt administration of our ally, drug-dealing Afghan President Hamid Karzai, is not disturbingly similar to Diem’s in South Vietnam c. 1963, while trying to put out burgeoning terrorist threats in neighboring Yemen (and distant Somalia; the global reach of terrorism) that could have been better contained with a regional balance of power rather than a chaotic power vacuum –- but that’s another story.

Tarnished U.S. Image A Terrorist Recruiting Tool?

Meanwhile, the man sitting in a Cairo café in Egypt (our ally, hence recipient of large chunk of U.S. foreign aid in the service of that elusive regional stability shattered by our invasion of ally-turned-enemy-turned-ally, Iraq) wonders whether it’s safe to travel in the U.S. when the moderate Imam who once called himself a Jew and traveled the region under Bush State Department auspices to promote friendship and understanding between Islam and the West is under siege by angry mobs in America. The Imam’s American crime is proposing to develop a community center near Ground Zero to serve a community of Muslim Americans that just happens to live within walking distance. The center will have quintessentially American basketball courts and a gym and cafeteria, with two floors out of 13 set aside for prayer. If New York City -- where days ago a cabbie was attacked by a drunken crazed Islamophobe -- isn’t safe for a Muslim, what part of the country is?

“Not to worry,” says the Cairo café man’s friend, who is traveled in the U.S. and a student of America’s schizoid culture. “It is an election year in America” and “George Bush’s party is out of power for two years,” he adds with a knowing finger wag. “Ah…” With a shrug of understanding the relieved Cairo café man takes a sip of his strong coffee. Perhaps it is safe for his son to study in American university, after all.

Newt Gingrich Exploits Fault Lines and Conspiracist History

As much as Ron Paul’s libertarian principles are offended by “how the right to own property also protects the 1st Amendment rights of assembly and religion,” the “grandstanding” and “grandiose” demagogue of his blistering statement aptly describes one, and only one, GOP presidential candidate: Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich is not one to let a crisis go to waste; or rather, he will not waste an opportunity to gin-up a crisis for personal political gain. The faux controversy, initially created out of whole cloth by a wingnut Islamophobic blogger, soon went viral once Fox and parts of the MSM picked it up. Republicans swiftly seized on what they perceived as a juicy wedge issue plum for November. It’s not as if they have a governing plan other than oppose the President and his party. Gingrich, who had been making presidential noises for some time, jumped in with both feet.

It was vintage Newt, from the demagogic exploitation of the issue to his strained historical revisionism linking the center’s proposed name, Cordoba, to “radical Islamic triumphalism” ascribed to the Moor conquest/occupation of the Iberian peninsula in 711. Gingrich is apparently concerned that “radical Islamists” plan to set up a new 800-year Caliphate on American soil, with New York City as its capital, renamed New Cordoba. To assuage Gingrich’s paranoid historical fantasies, the center’s planners have renamed it the Park 51 Center. What could be a more benignly American name, right? Right?

Understandably unfamiliar with the Republican Tea Party’s history-as-a-paranoid conspiracy sources (Alex Jones, Dan Brown, the Knights Templar, Turner Diaries, Coast-to-Coast AM) the center’s planners failed to account for the Arab numeral “51” in the center’s RE-name. AREA 51, anyone … need I say more? Or perhaps these Illuminatti Numeratti were familiar with the hidden meaning of the Arab numeral “51” all along? (Cue spooky conspiracy soundtrack.) This may seem over the top … until one delves into the weird sources and beliefs of Tea Party extremists.

Gingrich compared the misnamed “Ground Zero mosque” to placing a “Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum” and branded the moderate community center planners “radical Islamists.” Republicans either parroted Gingrich or signaled their acquiescence in this madness with their silence. Which, in a way, is worse.

Undeterred by widespread criticism outside the right wing fringe, Gingrich persisted in throwing more rhetorical bombs, accusing President Obama of “pandering to radical Islam.” He whipped up the GOP wingnut base into Islamophobic hysterics, then rested to survey the damage: ugly demonstrations at Ground Zero in which a black man with a tight-fitting cap was confused for a Muslim –- he was not –- and jostled by a white mob; teabaggers in California pledging to show up at a Muslim prayer with dogs; opposition to mosques across the country and growing hate crime threats to life and property of Muslim Americans.

Ron Paul to the Rescue, Or GOP Eruption?

When Ron Paul finally spoke out, the loquacious Newt windbag was uncharacteristically mute. The eccentric libertarian Paul, whose loyal followers believe reason in politics trumps charisma, is usually mild-mannered and measured in his criticisms. Paul could no longer hold back his revulsion with the NeoCons in the GOP, Gingrich chief among them, “who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled [with the “mosque” controversy] to constantly justify it.” Even blood wasn’t thicker than NeoCon Kool-Aid: “Ayn” Rand Paul added one more to his “run the other way” list -- microphones, cameras, reporters … and now, his daddy.

High principle aside, Ron Paul must have been royally pissed to violate Ronald Reagan’s “Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.” In a sense, Newt Gingrich’s flatulent bloviations did us all a favor, exposing the GOP’s dirty laundry. With the likely prospect of facing Newt and Sister Sarah in another quixotic presidential bid (who’s the Don and Sancho Panza in this matchup?), Ron Paul served notice he will not be a GOP talking point on-message drone this November. Not generally known for self-control or rhetorical discipline, Newt for his part must have had a talking-to behind the shed from the person(s) who will have something to say politically and financially about his fortunes as a future presidential candidate. ‘Cool it,’ they told him, ‘this thing could get out of hand for Republicans.’ Sure enough, Gingrich cancelled without further comment his attendance at a protest of the proposed “mosque” in lower Manhattan on the anniversary of 9/11.

‘Cain’t Nobody Here Lead This Party?’

What the Paul-Gingrich spat has revealed is a leadership crisis within the GOP/Tea Party. GOP movers and shakers (its leadership in exile), embarassed that Rush Limbaugh is widely viewed as the real leader of the Republican Party, are scrambling madly to find a suitable alternative Party leader without Palin’s high negatives among independents, RNC Chairman Michael Steele’s buffoonery, or Ron Paul’s blasphemous dovinshness and secular sacrilege. The face of the “Tea Party” is extremist: Sharron Angle, Rand Paul, Ken Buck, Marco Rubio. The face behind the “Tea Party” is corporate and sinister: Dick Armey, the Kock brothers, fake doctors, white supremacists:

Almost by default, John Boehner was coaxed away from the links to give a “major address.” The dour, robotic Boehner was clearly not ready for prime time. A creation of his corporate donor base, the former Republican back bencher was once caught distributing tobacco industry checks on the House floor. In this Q&A with Meet The Press and Fox (Chris Wallace decides to be a journalist), Boehner is incapable of answering a simple question: Will the GOP pay for extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich?:

That this moron without a plan or a clue would be Speaker if Republicans take over the House should be enough to give most rational fence-sitting voters pause. The Republicans cannot expect to sit on a lead, like Dewey did when he defeated Truman, or win somethin’ for nothin’. When November rolls around, it will inevitably come down to a choice for voters. And not only will Democrats look a lot better then, but they will also turn out, confounding the fat analyst with the Justin Bieber haircut.

Churchill’s Way Out

The tragic irony of America’s Byzantine history in the Middle East is that we have sacrificed dearly in blood and treasure to encourage moderate Islam to fight and defeat its radical terrorist fringe. The U.S. has propped up a corrupt Afghan regime with military might and bales of billions tossed into a black hole with Swiss bank destinations. Meanwhile on the home front, jingoistic bigots supportive of the war effort -- as long as it involves killing lots of “bad guys”-- project an image of intolerance and Islamophobia aimed precisely at one instrument of America’s outreach to moderate Islamic hearts and minds, the now infamous “Ground Zero mosque” Imam.

When Winston Churchill famously said of the former Soviet Union –-
“I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma: but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.”
-- He could not have predicted our so-called “Af-Pak policy” or schizophrenic history in the region, although its outlines were hinted at during his time, when Britain was a world empire. Substitute “Russia” with “Iraq, Afghanistan, or Pakistan” and “Russian” with “U.S.” and a way out of the quagmire is suddenly revealed. If we are wise enough to define what is and is not in our national interest.

Take Mitch McConnell at His Word? Not So Fast, Stephen Colbert!

Sunday on Meet The Press, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to lay to rest speculation that President Obama is a secret Muslim. Said Senator McConnell, “The President says he’s a Christian, I take him at his word.” McConnell’s equivocation did not escape Stephen Colbert: “Just like when Mitch McConnell says he’s not a human turtle hybrid, I take him at his word.

But he added, “And it’s not easy … I have a strong desire to feed this man lettuce and raw hamburger!” We report, you decide:

Monday School With Mike Malloy: Rachel, Mike’s a FAN! (Uh-oh)

… Or do you pretend like he’s a weird, eccentric uncle? The kind you only trot out on Thanksgiving … No, but that’s Pat Buchanan. Hmm … Rachel, I think you’ll have to adopt another “fake uncle”…

The Food (We) Eat

Is anyone really that surprised by the salmonella outbreak triggering the largest egg recall in the nation’s history? Not me, which is why I pay a little more for eggs from naturally raised, uncaged breeding hens. We are the only Western nation that packs hens so tightly into battery cages they “cannot flap their wings, nest, perch, bathe, or perform any natural behavior other than egg production. Their excrement piles up on the floor inches below their feet. While still chicks, their beaks are blunted on a metal wheel, or chopped off entirely to prevent them from pecking each other to pieces out of panic and frustration. Some chicks are kept for breeding, and often unwanted male chicks are ground up alive.”

All of this, of course, in the name of the Almighty Dollar and corporate profits. As reported, this recall could have been averted were the regulations proposed ten years ago by the FDA adopted sooner and not blunted by the Bush administration, leaving people like this to his own deregulatory devices, in charge of the nation’s food supply. Meanwhile, in those evil socialist countries of the European Union, battery cage confinement for hens has been banned in several countries and will be phased out completely by 2012. And we are slowly poisoning our children, compromising their immune systems, with growth hormones and antibiotics fed to our food supply -- cattle, pigs, dairy, hens, fish -- in huge corporate farms under horribly cruel conditions.

Not to speak of all the food we import from completely unregulated countries: China with its recent outbreak of tainted powdered milk and, of course, high concentration of lead in toys for America’s kids. And how about food and weight loss supplements -- Does anyone read labels carefully? The Bush FDA couldn’t even police food and drug safety within our borders; its clueless Consumer Product Safety Commission director did not know what to do with adequate funding; how was it expected to check the safety of Chinese imports?
While the CPSC struggled to keep up with its workload last year, President Bush requested an increase in its fiscal 2008 budget of $550,000 -- an amount so small it would have forced the agency to cut another 19 staffers. Congress approved a hike from $63 million to $80 million.
The Bush legacy of defunding the FDA, the CPSC, gutting safety inspections farmed out to state subcontractors, a virtual deregulation insanity, including lax oversight over the food and pharmaceutical industries -- Well ... its chickens are coming home to roost.

But wait! We’re not even talking about coal mining (Rand Paul says federal safety regulations are not needed) and the BP Gulf oil catastrophe.

YEP. THE BODIES JUST KEEP PILING UP. YOU GO, TEABAGGERS!
